What We’ll Do

We’ll start at 2.00 pm with a welcome and introduction. This workshop will be hosted at Wendy and Trevor Wieden’s 10-acre rural property at Goombungee. Many members visited 6 months ago for a Garden Insights afternoon, so this will also be an opportunity to have a sneak peak at progress as their permaculture garden begins to take form.

The afternoon will focus on a practical wicking bed workshop presented by Doreen Jachmann, Nourished Landscapes.

In this workshop we’ll learn about how to build a self-watering raised garden bed.

Wicking beds have many benefits; they are great for small space gardens, can be planted at a higher density, are low maintenance, and conserve water.

We will:

  • delve into the principles behind the wicking action
  • explore different styles of beds
  • discuss what grow medium to use (plus a recipe for how to make it yourself and save money)
  • how to maintain the heath of the system
  • what plants to grow in a wicking bed, and
  • pest protection, amongst other aspects.

You will leave with confidence to build your own wicking bed.
